As the Chief Trainer at Cadence K9 Dog Training LLC, with nearly 50 years of experience, I recognize one fundamental truth: no single training method works for every dog. In this field, many methodologies exist because one size truly does not fit all. But what defines a training method in practice?
1. Positive Reinforcement and Rewards: Any effective dog training method incorporates at least two core components. First, a dog must be rewarded for following a command. This reward must be something the dog actively desires and receives immediately after the action. The most vital reward is your praise and approval. For some dogs, the bond with their owner is so strong that praise is the only motivation required. However, many dogs, particularly in the early learning stages, may need more. In these instances, trainers often use food or high-value treats. While treats are nearly universal, we aim to use the minimum reward necessary to motivate. We always begin with praise and move to treats if needed. In specific cases, such as with working dogs or high-drive breeds, a special play toy may be used as the exclusive reward for a job well done.
2. Guidance and Correction: The second component is the method used to correct a dog when a command is ignored. One of the most prevalent tools today is the e-collar, known for being effective and producing fast results. Modern e-collars offer various settings, including tones, vibrations, and adjustable static impulses. When used correctly, these devices can serve as both a reward and a correction tool. However, at Cadence K9, we disavow the idea that a remote must always be in hand. We view the e-collar strictly as a bridge; as your dog improves, the dependency on the tool decreases. For larger or particularly strong working breeds, a prong collar may be recommended. When fitted and utilized professionally, this tool is highly effective and not harsh. Ultimately, our objective is to move toward the two most powerful words in training: "Yes" and "No." A fully trained dog can be reliably managed in any environment through these simple, clear vocal commands.
Behind Our Methodology
At Cadence K9 Dog Training LLC, we prepare you and your dog to operate as a cohesive team. In truth, your personal involvement is the most significant factor in your dog’s development. Each private session consists of roughly 1.5 to 2.0 hours of direct, professional instruction. These meetings usually occur once per week. Between these sessions, owners are expected to commit approximately six hours to "homework," practicing the specific cues and exercises covered during our time together. We recommend training for one hour daily, preferably broken into 15-minute intervals. Please be aware that some dogs may only have the mental stamina for 10-minute bursts; you can identify their limit if they begin to regress or lose focus. It is vital to understand that even with expert guidance, lasting success stems from a dedicated commitment to consistent practice. This focus is necessary to solidify your role as the trusted leader in your dog’s life.
